Dos and Don’ts: Coloring Hair Extensions
Just as you can dye natural hair, you can color extensions any shade you like. You can even do it without boiling a thing - all you need is your favorite hair color.
We do not recommend lightening or highlighting colored extensions. We recommend saving your lighter locks for virgin hair, which is hair that has been dyed before and has not been processed with any kind of coloring or bleach.
How To Color Hair Extensions
CHOOSE A COLOR
You will want to start by selecting your color. Your hair should be colored with a professional line of color and developer, rather than drugstore boxed color.
GATHER YOUR SUPPLIES
To dye your hair extensions, you will need some gloves, a color bowl, a brush, tin foil, plastic wrap, a wide-tooth comb, and a towel. If you're using the watercolor method of dyeing, you'll need a deep container such as a sink or mixing bowl.
PREP YOUR HAIR
The Halo Couture balayage clip in hair extensions you ordered come pre-conditioned. The silky coating needs to be removed in order for the color to absorb evenly. Soak your hair in the sink with shampoo added until your hair is lukewarm. Swish the product around in the water so it's nice and soapy, then rinse, and gently squeeze out excess water.
MIX THE COLOR
Each hair extension strand is held in place with a small piece of keratin (protein). Cover the keratin piece with a single drop of color and heat for 20-30 seconds. This will allow the protein to soften, making it easy for you to apply the keratin-colored piece to your own hair.
APPLY THE HAIR COLOR
If you’re planning on using the watercolor method, keep the weft completely underwater for a couple of seconds to a minute. Then take it out and gently squeeze the excess water from the base of the weft toward the ends. After doing this once, you can get an idea of how much color you can expect your weft to absorb.
PROCESS THE COLOR
After you’ve added color to your extensions, wrap them loosely in plastic wrap. This prevents them from drying out before the color soaks into your hair. The manufacturer’s directions should specify how long they should process, usually between 20 to 40 minutes.
RINSE YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS
After coloring your extension, you should rinse out the excess dye. Use a sulfate-free moisturizing or color-friendly formula of shampoo to wash hair extensions, then apply a sulfate-free deep conditioning treatment to add back some of the moisture that was lost during the hair coloring process.
COMB AND LET HAIR DRY
Once you’ve washed your hair extensions, gently towel-dry them. Avoid using a blow dryer, as it can cause damage. If you choose to use a curling iron or other heat tool, first use a heat protectant spray.
STYLE YOUR EXTENSIONS
When dry, your tape in hair extensions is ready to be styled. There are plenty of ways to wear extensions, from classic long waves to ultra-high ponytails. No matter which style you choose, it’s best to start with your natural hair first. Adding curls or waves to your hair will help blend the hair extensions with your natural locks.
THE BOTTOM LINE
If you’re up to the challenge and would like to color your real remy human hair extensions sew in at home, make sure they are real hair and that you are dyeing them a darker shade. But if any of these instructions seem overwhelming or if you don’t want to risk ruining your extensions, we recommend getting them colored professionally.
